National 4-H Study on Positive Youth Development
Marin County was one of nineteen California counties participating in the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development sponsored by National 4-H Council in partnership with Tufts University. The goal of the study was to identify factors related to positive youth development. Researchers want to understand how positive influences help protect young people from “problem behaviors.” At the national level, the study began in 2002, and currently includes over 6,000 diverse young people in 34 states.
California's participation in the longitudinal study has been completed. The preliminary findings indicate that 4-H helps young people excel beyond their peers. The structured learning, encouragement and adult mentoring in 4-H are vital in helping youth achieve future life successes.
4-H Youth trends:
-Generally excel in school, with better grades, higher levels of academic competence, and elevated engagement.
-More likely to pursue future courses or careers in science, engineering or computer technology, with female members more than twice as likely.
-Twice as likely to plan to attend college.
-Make healthy choices through health and safety education, and 4-H experiences.
-Have had significantly lower drug, alcohol, and cigarette use than their peers.
-Three times more likely to contribute actively to their communities.
