Rainbow Star Recipients at Achievement Day, October 4, 2009
WHAT: Members participate in learn-by-doing activities, youth-adult partnerships, and research-based educational programs to help enhance their leadership abilities and develop a wide range of other life skills. Membership age is 5-19, with some limitations for primary members age 5-8. The current program year is July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010.
WHY: 4-H develops leadership/citizenship skills; provides life skills education; strengthens youth-families-communities; and advances the field of youth development.
HOW: Members may participate in clubs, special interest groups, camp or other program settings. A minimum of 6 hours of education is required. Leadership and community service opportunities are available at the county, regional, state and national levels. Project costs vary. Uniform is optional.
WHERE: 4-H can be almost anywhere! A minimum of one adult volunteer leader and three members is required.
In addition to clubs, youth may be organized as special interest groups, daycamps, and after-school programs. Groups can meet short-term or year-round.

ENROLLMENT
Initial enrollments are due October 30th. Items needed: waivers for youth, waivers and confidentials for adults, and fees ($6 for adults, $12 for youth). Contact: Deborah Skaar at 415-499-4207
COUNTY COUNCIL
All adult leaders and members at least age 16 are members of the County Council. The Council meets 3-4 times a year to plan county events and make recommendations to staff. Each club is expected to send at least one representative to the meeting; voting requires a quorum. The first County Council meeting of the2009-2010 program year will be held on Tuesday, November 10th at 7:00 p.m. at the 4-H office in Novato.
WELCOME ALLISON KEANEY
We welcome the addition of Allison Keaney of Novato as 4-H Program Representative starting November 2. Allison and her two children have been active with the Sonoma County 4-H Program for four years, with special interests in archery, shooting sports, gardening, robotics, and fairs. Allison holds an MBA from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and has many years of experience in human resources and training. She also enjoys art, baking, traveling, and reading. Welcome Allison!

LEADER ORIENTATION: All leaders must be cleared via a background check and attend an orientation before they can begin volunteering. During the current staffing transition, orientations are scheduled as requested. Applications for fingerprinting/Livescan are available by contacting Deborah Skaar at the 4-H Office.
CAL CONFERENCE: The 20th annual C.A.L. Conference will be held January 22, 23, and 24, 2010 at Walker Creek Ranch in Petaluma. This is a sectional 4-H leadership training event for youth grades 6-12. The theme of this year's conference is "Creating a Leader - Find Your Inner Treasure!" Many leadership opportunities are available both before and during the conference. Educational sessions will be conducted by 4-H youth. For further details and registration materials, please contact the 4-H office at 415-499-4207. Completed forms must be turned in to the 4-H office in Novato by Friday, November 27, 2009. The cost is $75.00 and includes room and board on Friday and Saturday, all three meals on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. A conference t-shirt is an additional $10.00.
