4-H Program

WHAT: Members participate in learn-by-doing activities, youth-adult partnerships, and research-based educational programs to help enhance their leadership abilities and develop a wide range of other life skills. Membership age is 5-19, with some limitations for primary members age 5-8. The current program year is July 1, 2008-June 30, 2009.

WHY: 4-H develops leadership/citizenship skills; provides life skills education; strengthens youth-families-communities; and advances the field of youth development

HOW: Members may participate in clubs, special interest groups, camp or other program settings. A minimum of 6 hours of education is required. Leadership and community service opportunities are available at the county, regional, state and national levels. Project costs vary. Uniform is optional.

WHERE: 4-H can be almost anywhere! A minimum of one adult volunteer leader and three members is required.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS: In addition to clubs, youth may be organized as special interest groups, including schools, child care centers, and other agencies. Groups can meet short-term or year-round. Current groups include the School Embryology Project.

COUNTY COUNCIL: All adult leaders and members at least age 16 are members of the County Council. The Council meets 3-4 times a year to plan county events and make recommendations to staff. Next meeting: Tuesday, September 15, 2009, 7:00 p.m. at the 4-H office in Novato.

LEADER ORIENTATION: All leaders must be cleared in a background check and have participated in orientation before they can begin their service. Community club leaders will be notified of orientation dates, which will be available both during the day and evening hours. Applications for fingerprinting/Livescan are available by contacting Cindy Jensen at the 4-H Office.

UPCOMING COUNTY EVENTS:

BOAT BUILDING/SAILING PROJECT: This project is now underway and consists of three phases: basic woodworking skills (Saturdays from 1:00-5:00 p.m., 3/21 - 4/11), boat building (Saturdays from 1:00-5:00 p.m., 4/25 - 6/13, then Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 1:00-5:00 p.m., 6/16 through 8/15), and the last session, the sailing project (Saturdays 8/22 through 9/19.

RECORD BOOKS:  Due at the 4-H office in Novato by 4:30 p.m., Friday, July 10, 2009.

 4-H COUNCIL MEETING: 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the 4-H office in Novato. Each club is required to send one representative to the meeting.

Summer Internship Opportunities:

Metropolitan Transportation Commission has summer internships available where teens can gain exposure and valuable experience in various transportation-related careers.

Graduating seniors are eligible to apply.
