FSNEP Instruction in Canal area
The Marin 4-H Youth Development Program now includes a Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program. This Federally-funded program addresses the nutrition education needs of youth from food stamp-eligible families and those children receiving free or reduced price lunches.
If your school or agency includes a significant number of eligible students, we would like to offer you training and nutrition education program materials for all the children in your classroom. The programs promote healthful eating and physical activity, and many curricula incorporate gardening.
Research has found a clear connection between nutrition and learning. The findings show that children and youth will be ready to learn and achieve their fullest potential only if they are well nourished and healthy. Such children:
- Have better attendance at school
- Concentrate more on their lessons
- Achieve improved performance and higher test scores
Studies have shown that one effective and enjoyable way to increase fruit and vegetable consumption is to involve children in vegetable gardening. While children are learning about nutrition and gardens, they are also acquiring academic knowledge and skills to become responsible environmental stewards.
